Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
C
ValueB-
NeedB-

FutureB
The Steelers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the C. Somebody took the Steelers to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it.
They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while edge rusher, running back and other spots went begging. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Landing Bernard that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
If Caleb Lomu and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Caleb Lomu
In the 21st overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line, though they paid up to get him. Need was not the driver here.
Pick53
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
A curious use of the 53rd pick. Edge rusher, running back and other spots needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Emmanuel Pregnon did not.
Pick76
Rnd3
Germie Bernard
Germie Bernard in slot 76 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick85
Rnd3
Darrell Jackson Jr.
A reach on Darrell Jackson Jr. in pick No. 85; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick99
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley at Round 3, Pick 35 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick135
Rnd4
Davison Igbinosun
They let Davison Igbinosun come to them and pounced at pick 135. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick161
Rnd5
Drew Allar
Drew Allar at No. 161 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick216
Rnd6
Keyshaun Elliott
A straight-up fair deal on Keyshaun Elliott at the Round 6 slot, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick224
Rnd7
Jeff Caldwell
Good price on Jeff Caldwell in the 224th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick230
Rnd7
Zavion Thomas
Nothing to complain about; Zavion Thomas went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick237
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
They paid up for Trey Zuhn III at pick No. 237 when waiting would have done the job. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
