The phones sank the Saints this weekend: C+. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Saints did exactly that with Elijah Roberts in pick No. 131. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They banked enough surplus on Peebles to cover a lot of smaller sins.
The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Princely Umanmielen
In the 25th pick they get juice off the edge, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick40
Rnd2
Tate Ratledge
They talked themselves into Tate Ratledge at No. 40, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick79
Rnd3
Shemar Turner
No edge and no loss on Shemar Turner in slot 79; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick112
Rnd4
Sai'vion Jones
They reached into another round for Sai'vion Jones, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick131
Rnd4
Elijah Roberts
Elijah Roberts in Round 4, Pick 29 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick162
Rnd5
Aeneas Peebles
Aeneas Peebles at pick No. 162 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick166
Rnd5
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
Antwaun Powell-Ryland in the Round 5 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick184
Rnd6
Nazir Stackhouse
A big swing on Nazir Stackhouse at slot 184, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick207
Rnd6
Ahmed Hassanein
Ahmed Hassanein at Round 6, Pick 31 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick254
Rnd7
LaJohntay Wester
A straight-up fair deal on LaJohntay Wester at the 254th pick, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
