FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the Cowboys: B. The Cowboys clearly saw something nobody else did in Princewill Umanmielen, taking him 67 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
On value alone, Styles makes the weekend a net positive. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. The Layden Robinson deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
Arvell Reese at pick No. 28 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick30
Rnd1
Chris Brazzell II
In slot 30 they get a true top target at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick62
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
They robbed the room for Sonny Styles here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick92
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
They barely believed it either: Zakee Wheatley still on the board at pick 92. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick114
Rnd4
Chris Johnson
Chris Johnson at No. 114 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick127
Rnd4
Vincent Anthony Jr.
A wild overpay on Vincent Anthony Jr. in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick130
Rnd4
LJ Martin
They talked themselves into LJ Martin at the 130th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick153
Rnd5
Gunner Stockton
Gunner Stockton at Round 5, Pick 14 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick172
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
No drama and no debate, DJ Campbell went about where he belonged in No. 172. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick179
Rnd5
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Jermaine Mathews Jr. at pick No. 179 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick181
Rnd5
Princewill Umanmielen
Princewill Umanmielen in pick 181 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick211
Rnd6
Isaiah Nwokobia
The board had Isaiah Nwokobia higher than the Round 6 slot, and the safety fell to them anyway. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick220
Rnd7
Nolan Rucci
They took Nolan Rucci at par in the 220th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick225
Rnd7
De'Zhaun Stribling
De'Zhaun Stribling at slot 225 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
