FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Packers to a D+. The rest of the league had time to spare on Collin Oliver; the Packers did not wait, grabbing him 78 spots ahead at the 221st pick.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
However the rest shakes out, Higgins at that price is a win they earned. Adding Cooper DeJean by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Shemar Stewart
A clean, defensible pick in No. 23 with a little surplus value in Shemar Stewart. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick54
Rnd2
Landon Jackson
They read the board right and Landon Jackson was the payoff at pick 54. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick87
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins at pick No. 87 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick124
Rnd4
Anthony Belton
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Anthony Belton at the 124th overall pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick126
Rnd4
Quincy Riley
This one needs a full-page explanation: Quincy Riley in Round 4, Pick 24, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick134
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
Steal is underselling it; Smael Mondon Jr. at slot 134 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick142
Rnd5
Barryn Sorrell
Value said wait; Barryn Sorrell in No. 142 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick159
Rnd5
Willie Lampkin
A wild overpay on Willie Lampkin in the 159th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
Pick161
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the Round 5 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick164
Rnd5
CJ West
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for CJ West. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick165
Rnd5
Que Robinson
Que Robinson at the 165th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick168
Rnd5
Drew Kendall
Drew Kendall at pick No. 168 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick182
Rnd6
Jack Kiser
Jack Kiser at slot 182 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick194
Rnd6
Tyler Cooper
Tyler Cooper in Round 6, Pick 18 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick198
Rnd6
Carson Vinson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Carson Vinson this early at Round 6, Pick 22. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick221
Rnd7
Collin Oliver
They talked themselves into Collin Oliver at the 221st pick, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick237
Rnd7
Warren Brinson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Warren Brinson well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick250
Rnd7
John Williams
John Williams in No. 250 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
