Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesB FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the Chargers for Martinez: B.

The Chargers did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Damien Martinez fell into the 220th pick. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.

The cost of the Walker reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The trade work was a quiet net positive.

They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Tyler Warren
Value with a capital V on Tyler Warren in the 31st overall pick, a genuine coup. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick55 Rnd2 Kaleb Johnson
Kaleb Johnson at the 55th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The roster fit checks out.
Pick63 Rnd2 Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins at pick 63 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick86 Rnd3 Jayden Higgins
A slide stopped in the Round 3 slot, with Jayden Higgins worth more than the price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick124 Rnd4 David Walker
David Walker at slot 124 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick132 Rnd4 Kyren Lacy
Kyren Lacy at Round 4, Pick 31 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick159 Rnd5 Logan Brown
They did well to land Logan Brown in No. 159, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick177 Rnd5 Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins in pick No. 177 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick183 Rnd6 Cobee Bryant
Cobee Bryant in No. 183 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick201 Rnd6 Cam Horsley
They reached a country mile for Cam Horsley at the 201st pick, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick215 Rnd6 Clay Webb
They left a pile of value on the table to take Clay Webb this early at the 215th overall pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick220 Rnd7 Damien Martinez
Damien Martinez at the Round 7 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
Pick253 Rnd7 Hunter Wohler
Fair-plus on Hunter Wohler, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
