Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall
B-

FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the Chargers: B-. They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: David Walker, 64 picks early at Round 4, Pick 7. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Fortune. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Grey Zabel
In pick 22 they get a cornerstone up front, though they paid up to get him.
Pick56
Rnd2
Harold Fannin Jr.
A tidy little value on Harold Fannin Jr. in pick No. 56, a step better than break-even. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick86
Rnd3
Jack Bech
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jack Bech in No. 86. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick108
Rnd4
David Walker
A big swing on David Walker at the 108th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick124
Rnd4
Cody Simon
They liked Cody Simon enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 4 slot. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick159
Rnd5
O'Donnell Fortune
Taking O'Donnell Fortune in the 159th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick177
Rnd5
Cobee Bryant
A reach for Cobee Bryant in pick No. 177; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick183
Rnd6
Jack Kiser
Jack Kiser at slot 183 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick201
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick 201 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick215
Rnd6
CJ West
A straight-up fair deal on CJ West at the 215th pick, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick220
Rnd7
Clay Webb
Clay Webb at the 220th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick253
Rnd7
Marcus Yarns
Fair-plus on Marcus Yarns, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
