The Patriots turned the phones into found money: C. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Peny Boone at No. 69, a reach of 334 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. It lands right in the middle: a C, no more, no less.
That Ersery pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, Xavier McKinney leading the way.
Hit on Amari Kight and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Amari Kight
Amari Kight at pick 4 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick69
Rnd3
Peny Boone
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Peny Boone. The roster fit checks out.
Pick77
Rnd3
Jake Smith
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jake Smith in the 77th overall pick, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick106
Rnd4
Shilo Sanders
A real head-scratcher, Shilo Sanders in No. 106 is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick171
Rnd5
Jeremy Crawshaw
Jeremy Crawshaw at the Round 5 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick192
Rnd6
Trevor Etienne
The board fumbled Trevor Etienne all the way to slot 192, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick220
Rnd7
Fentrell Cypress II
Fentrell Cypress II at pick No. 220 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick238
Rnd7
Aireontae Ersery
They will replay Aireontae Ersery at the 238th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
