The 49ers cashed the board's mistake on Burnip: A-. The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The 49ers watched James Burnip slide 87 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Reaching for Hemingway left real value on the table behind him. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In the 24th pick they get a security blanket over the middle at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick75
Rnd3
Jalon Walker
They barely believed it either: Jalon Walker still on the board at the Round 3 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick99
Rnd3
Tez Johnson
A tidy bit of business in slot 99, where Tez Johnson graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick112
Rnd4
Dylan Fairchild
They robbed the room for Dylan Fairchild here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jake Majors
Somehow Jake Majors was still sitting there in pick No. 138, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick139
Rnd4
Sebastian Castro
Steal is underselling it; Sebastian Castro at the 139th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick189
Rnd6
Cam Skattebo
Circle this one: Cam Skattebo at No. 189 is a fall that decides a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick228
Rnd7
Tonka Hemingway
They reached a country mile for Tonka Hemingway at Round 7, Pick 10, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick232
Rnd7
Andres Borregales
They will replay Andres Borregales at pick 232 for years; that is how good the value is. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick255
Rnd7
James Burnip
A specialist of that caliber at the Round 7 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
