Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall A-
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureA
The Commanders worked the phones like thieves and earned a A-.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Commanders did exactly that with Vincent Anthony Jr. in the 147th overall pick. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Styles pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at tight end and interior defensive lineman.

On value alone, Styles makes the weekend a net positive.

Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Arvell Reese and all.

Pick Analysis
Pick24 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In the Round 1 slot they get a green-dot type in the middle, and a steal at that.
Pick59 Rnd2 Sonny Styles
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Sonny Styles at linebacker with tight end and interior defensive lineman open.
Pick68 Rnd3 Germie Bernard
A reasonable price with a little left over, Germie Bernard in the 68th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick88 Rnd3 Will Lee III
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Will Lee III in slot 88. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick123 Rnd4 Charles Jagusah
No drama and no debate, Charles Jagusah went about where he belonged in No. 123. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick125 Rnd4 Zachariah Branch
A tidy little value on Zachariah Branch in pick No. 125, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick147 Rnd5 Vincent Anthony Jr.
A real head-scratcher, Vincent Anthony Jr. in pick 147 is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick186 Rnd6 Le'Veon Moss
They went early on Le'Veon Moss in No. 186, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick191 Rnd6 Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton at pick No. 191 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick220 Rnd7 Malachi Nelson
Malachi Nelson at the 220th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
