Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
A-
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesA+
FutureA
The Commanders fleeced the room on the phones and earned a A-. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Commanders spent the 94th overall pick on Malachi Lawrence, a name most had 43 spots down the list. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Thieneman pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The Lawson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback and interior defensive lineman still on the board.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
Good price on Sonny Styles in the 26th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick60
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
Somehow Dillon Thieneman was still sitting there in the Round 2 slot, and they pounced on premier safety value. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick71
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Deontae Lawson at linebacker with quarterback and interior defensive lineman open.
Pick91
Rnd3
Ja'Kobi Lane
Ja'Kobi Lane at slot 91 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick94
Rnd3
Malachi Lawrence
Malachi Lawrence in No. 94 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick126
Rnd4
Michael Trigg
Michael Trigg at the 126th pick is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick130
Rnd4
CJ Daniels
No edge and no loss on CJ Daniels in slot 130; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick145
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
No drama and no debate, Davison Igbinosun went about where he belonged in No. 145. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick185
Rnd6
Le'Veon Moss
They read the board right and Le'Veon Moss was the payoff at pick 185. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick196
Rnd6
Nolan Rucci
A premium they did not need to pay, Nolan Rucci a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick223
Rnd7
Kamran James
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kamran James well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
