Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
C+
ValueC-
NeedB+
TradesC
FutureC+
A mixed bag for the Cowboys, and a C+ to match. The Dominic Lovett pick is the one that will follow the Cowboys into the fall. They took him 144 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. It washes out to a C+, no better and no worse.
They banked enough surplus on Nelson to cover a lot of smaller sins. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
In the 12th overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick44
Rnd2
Kevin Winston Jr.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kevin Winston Jr. this early at slot 44. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick76
Rnd3
Danny Stutsman
Danny Stutsman at the 76th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick143
Rnd5
Zeek Biggers
Zeek Biggers in pick No. 143 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick174
Rnd5
Ja'Quinden Jackson
They talked themselves into Ja'Quinden Jackson at the Round 5 slot, and the board did not agree. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick204
Rnd6
Trevor Etienne
Somehow Trevor Etienne was still sitting there in Round 6, Pick 28, and they pounced on premier running back value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick211
Rnd6
Justin Walley
Value said wait; Justin Walley in Round 6, Pick 35 says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick217
Rnd7
Phil Mafah
They paid a round early for Phil Mafah in the 217th pick, more than the board wanted. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick239
Rnd7
Dominic Lovett
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dominic Lovett. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick247
Rnd7
Jack Nelson
Taking Jack Nelson in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
