Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall D+
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureA+
The phones sank the Bengals this weekend: D+.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Bengals did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Hard to defend, and the D+ reflects that.

With quarterback and running back unsolved, spending premium capital on edge rusher is the choice that costs them. They will need Fairchild to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

Umanmielen falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick Analysis
Pick10 Rnd1 Shemar Stewart
In the 10th overall pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. More want than need.
Pick17 Rnd1 Jahdae Barron
In pick No. 17 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick19 Rnd1 Colston Loveland
In Round 1, Pick 19 they get a mismatch in the passing game. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick49 Rnd2 Princely Umanmielen
Of all the spots to shop, they chose edge rusher. Princely Umanmielen in pick 49 leaves quarterback and running back for later.
Pick53 Rnd2 Tyleik Williams
Value with a capital V on Tyleik Williams in the 53rd pick, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick61 Rnd2 Deone Walker
Deone Walker at the Round 2 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick81 Rnd3 Dylan Fairchild
Dylan Fairchild in No. 81 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick104 Rnd4 Tory Horton
They paid sticker price for Tory Horton in slot 104, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick107 Rnd4 Jeffrey Bassa
They talked themselves into Jeffrey Bassa at pick No. 107, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick153 Rnd5 Oluwafemi Oladejo
They let Oluwafemi Oladejo come to them and pounced at the Round 5 slot. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick184 Rnd6 Jaylen Reed
A straight-up fair deal on Jaylen Reed at the 184th pick, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick221 Rnd7 Desmond Watson
They liked Desmond Watson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 221. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
