The Raiders land in the muddy middle: C+. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Raiders took Kyle Ford a full 323 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. A weekend of give and take that grades a C+.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took James. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Hit on Nic Scourton and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Nic Scourton
In pick 6 they get juice off the edge, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick68
Rnd3
Kyle Ford
Kyle Ford at the Round 3 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick103
Rnd4
KJ Jefferson
KJ Jefferson at the 103rd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
Pick108
Rnd4
Karene Reid
This one needs a full-page explanation: Karene Reid in the 108th pick, miles early. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick143
Rnd5
Andres Borregales
A conviction pick on Andres Borregales at pick No. 143 that the board grades a round light. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick180
Rnd6
KeAndre Lambert-Smith
They reached into another round for KeAndre Lambert-Smith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick213
Rnd6
Kitan Crawford
A real head-scratcher, Kitan Crawford in pick No. 213 is miles ahead of his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick215
Rnd6
Seth McLaughlin
Seth McLaughlin in No. 215 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick222
Rnd7
Jordan James
Steal is underselling it; Jordan James at the 222nd overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
