A puzzling weekend of work from the Panthers: D. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Panthers did exactly that with Elijah Roberts in pick No. 8.
The Wilson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The linebacker spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and linebacker is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Elijah Roberts
In the Round 1 slot they get a double-digit-sack hope, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick40
Rnd2
Travis Hunter
Somehow Travis Hunter was still sitting there in the 40th overall pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick74
Rnd3
Tate Ratledge
A straight-up fair deal on Tate Ratledge at Round 3, Pick 10, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick114
Rnd4
Nazir Stackhouse
They reached a country mile for Nazir Stackhouse at the 114th pick, and the board is aghast. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick140
Rnd5
Oluwafemi Oladejo
By-the-book stuff, Oluwafemi Oladejo at pick No. 140 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick146
Rnd5
KeAndre Lambert-Smith
KeAndre Lambert-Smith at pick 146 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick163
Rnd5
Jared Wilson
The board fumbled Jared Wilson all the way to Round 5, Pick 25, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
