Draft Grade — Cowboys

FutureB-
The Cowboys worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+. There is reaching, and then there is Princewill Umanmielen at the Round 6 slot. The Cowboys jumped the board by 64 and dared it to prove them wrong. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
That linebacker hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. It is not that Taaffe is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but linebacker.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Jermod McCoy
Jermod McCoy at the 17th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick27
Rnd1
Dillon Thieneman
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dillon Thieneman in the Round 1 slot. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick45
Rnd2
Denzel Boston
They barely believed it either: Denzel Boston still on the board at slot 45. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick58
Rnd2
Max Klare
A tight end of that caliber at Round 2, Pick 26 is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick90
Rnd3
Aaron Graves
Nothing to complain about; Aaron Graves went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick113
Rnd4
Michael Taaffe
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Michael Taaffe at safety with linebacker open.
Pick152
Rnd5
D'Angelo Ponds
Somehow D'Angelo Ponds was still sitting there in pick No. 152, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick165
Rnd5
Kage Casey
A tidy little value on Kage Casey in the 165th pick, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick177
Rnd6
Princewill Umanmielen
They reached a country mile for Princewill Umanmielen at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick195
Rnd6
Le'Veon Moss
Le'Veon Moss slid further than he should have, and No. 195 is lovely value for the running back. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick216
Rnd6
Jalon Daniels
Jalon Daniels in Round 6, Pick 40 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
