Draft Grade — Bills
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB TradesB FutureC+
Best value of the weekend goes to the Bills for Belton: B.

The board owed the Bills one, and it paid up: Anthony Belton, the No. 115 name on the board, sitting there at the 170th pick like a gift left on the doorstep. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.

They will need Kroeger to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The Bills indulged a want in Hairston while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Kenneth Grant
In slot 30 they get a load in the middle, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick56 Rnd2 Xavier Watts
A quiet steal in the 56th overall pick: Xavier Watts for less than the market said. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick62 Rnd2 Trey Amos
Trey Amos in the 62nd pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick81 Rnd3 Maxwell Hairston
A want over a need in Round 3, Pick 17: Maxwell Hairston adds a cornerback while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick109 Rnd4 Tai Felton
Tai Felton at pick 109 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick170 Rnd5 Anthony Belton
Steal is underselling it; Anthony Belton at pick No. 170 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick173 Rnd5 Jeffrey Bassa
Taking Jeffrey Bassa in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick218 Rnd7 Robert Longerbeam
Robert Longerbeam at No. 218 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick230 Rnd7 Kai Kroeger
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kai Kroeger in pick No. 230, miles early. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
