The phones sank the Bills this weekend: D. The Bills went off the board in a big way for Kaden Prather, 127 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Strong pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at linebacker, quarterback and other spots. For all the activity, linebacker went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, linebacker very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Landon Jackson
In the 22nd overall pick they get a bendy edge with upside, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
Pick27
Rnd1
T.J. Sanders
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the defensive front, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick30
Rnd1
Maxwell Hairston
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a ballhawk on the outside, a steep price for the projection.
Pick45
Rnd2
Deone Walker
Deone Walker at pick No. 45 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick80
Rnd3
Dorian Strong
A surprising call. With linebacker, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent the 80th pick on Dorian Strong, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick115
Rnd4
Chase Lundt
Chase Lundt in pick 115 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick134
Rnd4
Jordan Hancock
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jordan Hancock in pick No. 134, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick147
Rnd5
Jackson Hawes
A real head-scratcher, Jackson Hawes in No. 147 is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick154
Rnd5
Kaden Prather
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kaden Prather well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
