Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall C
ValueC NeedB TradesF FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Patriots to a C.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Nick Nash in Round 4, Pick 5. The final tally is a middling C.

That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.

Pick Analysis
Pick34 Rnd2 Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery at the Round 2 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick39 Rnd2 Derrick Harmon
Nothing to complain about; Derrick Harmon went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick65 Rnd3 Jared Ivey
A premium they did not need to pay, Jared Ivey a notch or two before his time. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick70 Rnd3 Hollin Pierce
They left a pile of value on the table to take Hollin Pierce this early at the 70th pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick72 Rnd3 Tyler Warren
You do not let a tight end like Tyler Warren reach slot 72 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick80 Rnd3 Tez Johnson
They paid a round early for Tez Johnson in the 80th overall pick, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick106 Rnd4 Nick Nash
A big swing on Nick Nash at the 106th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
Pick141 Rnd5 Carson Schwesinger
Nice patience on Carson Schwesinger, who had no business lasting to pick No. 141. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick221 Rnd7 Will Lee III
They talked themselves into Will Lee III at Round 7, Pick 7, and the board did not agree. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick223 Rnd7 Jalen Rivers
Jalen Rivers in slot 223 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick235 Rnd7 Cam Skattebo
The board fumbled Cam Skattebo all the way to the 235th pick, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
