The Patriots jumped the board for Jackson and paid for it: F. Somebody took the Patriots to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. About as rough as the board gets, and a F to prove it.
They will need Jackson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In No. 8 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
Pick12
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
In pick 12 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick44
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
They reached into another round for Donovan Jackson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick69
Rnd3
Jared Ivey
The board had cheaper options than Jared Ivey at the 69th pick, and it noticed. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick77
Rnd3
Devin Neal
Devin Neal at pick No. 77 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick106
Rnd4
Cobee Bryant
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Cobee Bryant well ahead of where he belonged. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick144
Rnd5
Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore at Round 5, Pick 6 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick171
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
A straight-up fair deal on Seth McLaughlin at the 171st overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
Pick220
Rnd7
Luke Lachey
Value with a capital V on Luke Lachey in pick 220, a genuine coup. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick238
Rnd7
Carson Vinson
Carson Vinson in pick No. 238 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
