Jay762401 DRAFTING FOR THESteelers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Trotter Jr. should have been long gone. The Steelers pounced, and earned a B-. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jeremiah Trotter Jr. got past him. The Steelers do not have to explain a thing at No. 85. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The cost of the Hartman reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
In the 21st pick they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value.
Pick53
Rnd2
Kiran Amegadjie
Kiran Amegadjie at pick 53 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick85
Rnd3
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Somehow Jeremiah Trotter Jr. was still sitting there in Round 3, Pick 22, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick120
Rnd4
Beau Brade
A tidy bit of business in slot 120, where Beau Brade graded well above the range. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick121
Rnd4
MarShawn Lloyd
They took MarShawn Lloyd at par in the 121st overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick199
Rnd6
Sam Hartman
The board had cheaper options than Sam Hartman at No. 199, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick242
Rnd7
Zakhari Franklin
The board fumbled Zakhari Franklin all the way to pick No. 242, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
