Overall B-

A solid, sensible weekend for the Steelers: B-.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Steelers did exactly that with Fabien Lovett in the 129th pick.

On value alone, Leonard makes the weekend a net positive. With safety, edge rusher and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on defensive back is the choice that costs them. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through safety.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Edgerrin Cooper
In the Round 1 slot they get a green-dot type in the middle, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick59 Rnd2 Cooper DeJean
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 59th pick on Cooper DeJean with safety, edge rusher and other spots unsolved.
Pick92 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
A reasonable price with a little left over, Zak Zinter in the 92nd overall pick. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick98 Rnd3 Max Melton
Of all the spots to shop, they chose defensive back. Max Melton in No. 98 leaves safety, edge rusher and other spots for later.
Pick113 Rnd4 Roman Wilson
A straight-up fair deal on Roman Wilson at Round 4, Pick 13, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick123 Rnd4 Beaux Limmer
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Beaux Limmer at offensive lineman with safety, edge rusher and other spots open.
Pick129 Rnd4 Fabien Lovett
Fabien Lovett in slot 129 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick201 Rnd6 Riley Leonard
Riley Leonard at the 201st overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick244 Rnd7 Mario Williams
Taking Mario Williams in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick250 Rnd7 J.C. Davis
J.C. Davis at No. 250 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
