FutureB-
Grand theft in the Round 7 slot: the 49ers steal Berger and grade out a D. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The 49ers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
Keegan has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Berger.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Taliese Fuaga
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Taliese Fuaga. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick32
Rnd1
Jared Verse
The board had Jared Verse higher than pick 32, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick64
Rnd2
Ja'Lynn Polk
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Ja'Lynn Polk in No. 64. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick82
Rnd3
Edgerrin Cooper
They robbed the room for Edgerrin Cooper here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
Pick95
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
They barely believed it either: Brenden Rice still on the board at the 95th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick98
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
Good price on Zak Zinter in the 98th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick135
Rnd4
Jaheim Bell
Jaheim Bell in pick 135 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick153
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey slipping to Round 5, Pick 17 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick177
Rnd6
Edefuan Ulofoshio
Somehow Edefuan Ulofoshio was still sitting there in the 177th pick, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick210
Rnd6
Jaylen Harrell
A slide stopped in No. 210, with Jaylen Harrell worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick213
Rnd6
Trevor Keegan
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Trevor Keegan. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick215
Rnd6
Taulia Tagovailoa
They liked Taulia Tagovailoa enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 6 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick219
Rnd6
Erick All
A reasonable price with a little left over, Erick All in slot 219. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick253
Rnd7
Jalen Berger
A running back of that caliber at the 253rd overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
