The Jets lost the trade table, and the D- tells the story. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Jets spent No. 256 on Trajan Jeffcoat, a name most had 52 spots down the list. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Trotter Jr..
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In pick No. 27 they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette at pick 33 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick39
Rnd2
Cooper Beebe
They jumped the gun on Cooper Beebe, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick52
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
They paid sticker price for T.J. Tampa in Round 2, Pick 20, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick72
Rnd3
Jaylen Wright
Jaylen Wright in the 72nd pick is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick83
Rnd3
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at slot 83 is the proof. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick90
Rnd3
Cole Bishop
The board had cheaper options than Cole Bishop at Round 3, Pick 27, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick185
Rnd6
Joe Milton III
They went early on Joe Milton III in slot 185, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick226
Rnd7
Bub Means
They reached into another round for Bub Means, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick256
Rnd7
Trajan Jeffcoat
A big swing on Trajan Jeffcoat at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick257
Rnd7
Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor at the 257th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
