The Bears found their guy under center in Williams: B+. The search is over. The Bears handed the keys to Caleb Williams, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
They banked enough surplus on Bishop to cover a lot of smaller sins. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In the 1st overall pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick28
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In pick No. 28 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick60
Rnd2
Mekhi Wingo
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mekhi Wingo. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick75
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at the 75th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick111
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
A clean, defensible pick in Round 4, Pick 11 with a little surplus value in Matt Goncalves. It fills a real need, too.
Pick123
Rnd4
Sataoa Laumea
No drama and no debate, Sataoa Laumea went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick129
Rnd4
Jarrian Jones
Jarrian Jones at pick 129 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick143
Rnd5
Cole Bishop
Cole Bishop at No. 143 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
