Draft Grade — Vikings
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesF FutureB-
The Vikings found their guy under center in Maye: D-.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Vikings did exactly that with Jowon Briggs in No. 232.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The whole projection now runs through Drake Maye; hit there and everything else looks smarter.

They banked enough surplus on Wilson to cover a lot of smaller sins. The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.

Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.

Pick Analysis
Pick10 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In the 10th overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick11 Rnd1 Drake Maye
A reasonable price with a little left over, Drake Maye in Round 1, Pick 11. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick23 Rnd1 Brian Thomas Jr.
In slot 23 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick72 Rnd3 Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson at pick 72 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick108 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
A quiet steal in the 108th pick: Khyree Jackson for less than the market said. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick111 Rnd4 Cole Bishop
Nothing to complain about; Cole Bishop went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick129 Rnd4 Mohamed Kamara
Mohamed Kamara at the 129th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick135 Rnd4 Isaiah Davis
This one needs a full-page explanation: Isaiah Davis in the 135th pick, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
Pick157 Rnd5 Javion Cohen
They paid a round early for Javion Cohen in Round 5, Pick 21, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick167 Rnd5 Layden Robinson
They liked Layden Robinson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 167. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick177 Rnd6 Jared Wiley
A tidy bit of business in slot 177, where Jared Wiley graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick230 Rnd7 Solomon Byrd
Solomon Byrd at pick No. 230 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick232 Rnd7 Jowon Briggs
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jowon Briggs. It fills a real need, too.
