Draft Grade — Buccaneers
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB TradesB+ FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Buccaneers a B-.

The rest of the league had time to spare on AJ Barner; the Buccaneers did not wait, grabbing him 47 spots ahead at slot 125. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.

The Buccaneers indulged a want in Smith while a need in interior defensive lineman stayed open. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick32 Rnd1 Jackson Powers-Johnson
In pick No. 32 they get a blindside protector. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick57 Rnd2 Trey Benson
Value said wait; Trey Benson in the 57th pick says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick89 Rnd3 DJ James
DJ James slid further than he should have, and the Round 3 slot is lovely value for the cornerback. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick92 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
They liked Zak Zinter enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 92. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick93 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
They paid sticker price for Brenden Rice in the 93rd overall pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick95 Rnd3 Maason Smith
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent No. 95 on Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE they were not short of.
Pick113 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray in pick No. 113 is fair value, right on his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick125 Rnd4 AJ Barner
A wild overpay on AJ Barner in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick159 Rnd5 Jordan Travis
A conviction pick on Jordan Travis at the 159th overall pick that the board grades a round light. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick220 Rnd6 Solomon Byrd
Solomon Byrd in No. 220 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick246 Rnd7 Tyrice Knight
Tyrice Knight at pick 246 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
