FutureB
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Panthers and Brooks: A-. The real work happened on the phones. The Panthers fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A-.
Brooks at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In the end it comes back to Matthew Golden, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
In the 14th overall pick they get a difference-maker at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick31
Rnd1
Jalon Walker
Good price on Jalon Walker in the 31st pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick57
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
Nice patience on Xavier Watts, who had no business lasting to pick No. 57. It fills a real need, too.
Pick74
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
A running back of that caliber at the Round 3 slot is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick117
Rnd4
David Walker
David Walker in Round 4, Pick 15 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick140
Rnd5
Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton slid further than he should have, and No. 140 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick146
Rnd5
Jonas Sanker
A tidy bit of business in No. 146, where Jonas Sanker graded well above the range. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick163
Rnd5
Jalen Rivers
Jalen Rivers at slot 163 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick211
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
They read the board right and Oronde Gadsden II was the payoff at the Round 6 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick217
Rnd7
Kain Medrano
Kain Medrano at pick 217 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick230
Rnd7
Tahj Brooks
Tahj Brooks in Round 7, Pick 14 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
