The Panthers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B. The Panthers let the board come to them and it handed over Xavier Watts in the 57th pick, comfortably the best value of their weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. The cost of the Buchanan reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
In slot 8 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick57
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts in the Round 2 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick74
Rnd3
Carson Schwesinger
Carson Schwesinger in Round 3, Pick 10 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick111
Rnd4
Ashton Gillotte
Ashton Gillotte slid further than he should have, and the 111th overall pick is lovely value for the edge rusher. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick118
Rnd4
Anthony Belton
Fair-plus on Anthony Belton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick140
Rnd5
Mello Dotson
Mello Dotson in pick No. 140 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick146
Rnd5
Cody Simon
A tidy bit of business in the 146th pick, where Cody Simon graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick163
Rnd5
Mitchell Evans
They let Mitchell Evans come to them and pounced at No. 163. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick230
Rnd7
Kyle Monangai
They read the board right and Kyle Monangai was the payoff at the Round 7 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick237
Rnd7
Cam Jackson
Cam Jackson at pick 237 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick250
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
They went early on Teddye Buchanan in Round 7, Pick 34, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
