Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall D+
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Steelers let Smith fall into their laps, and walked away with a D+.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Steelers did exactly that with Jamaree Caldwell in No. 229. The process wobbled, and the D+ is where it lands.

Landing Smith that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.

For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick22 Rnd1 Derrick Harmon
In pick 22 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick28 Rnd1 Emeka Egbuka
In the 28th pick they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick52 Rnd2 Tre Harris
Good price on Tre Harris in slot 52, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick83 Rnd3 Xavier Watts
A safety of that caliber at the Round 3 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick121 Rnd4 Luke Kandra
Luke Kandra in Round 4, Pick 20 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick161 Rnd5 Quinshon Judkins
They will replay Quinshon Judkins at the 161st pick for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick218 Rnd7 Brashard Smith
Circle this one: Brashard Smith at the Round 7 slot is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick229 Rnd7 Jamaree Caldwell
Jamaree Caldwell at the 229th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick245 Rnd7 Shilo Sanders
A conviction pick on Shilo Sanders at slot 245 that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
