Draft Grade — Texans

FutureB-
The Texans robbed the room for Coleman. Final grade: D+. Somebody took the Texans to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.
It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Texans had louder needs to answer first. Every board in the league had Tupuola-Fetui lower, and that gap is the story. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
On value alone, Coleman makes the weekend a net positive.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
In No. 27 they get a disruptor off the edge, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick53
Rnd2
Keon Coleman
Circle this one: Keon Coleman at the Round 2 slot is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick88
Rnd3
Trey Benson
Trey Benson in the 88th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick89
Rnd3
Maason Smith
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 89th pick on Maason Smith with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Pick90
Rnd3
Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley at pick No. 90 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick121
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni in pick 121 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
Pick127
Rnd4
Jaden Hicks
A straight-up fair deal on Jaden Hicks at pick 127, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick138
Rnd5
Nehemiah Pritchett
They did well to land Nehemiah Pritchett in No. 138, just ahead of his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick158
Rnd5
Zion Tupuola-Fetui
A real head-scratcher, Zion Tupuola-Fetui in the 158th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick199
Rnd6
Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett is a better player than slot 199 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
