Draft Grade — Dolphins
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Dolphins a B-. Call it larceny. A.J. Haulcy sat on the board until the 75th overall pick, and the Dolphins did not need to be asked twice. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
The Hobbs pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. It is not that Haulcy is a bad player; it is that the Dolphins had louder needs to answer first. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
On the needs board they went 3 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In No. 11 they get a two-high chess piece, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Pick30
Rnd1
Denzel Boston
In the 30th overall pick they get a home-run threat at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick43
Rnd2
Max Iheanachor
Max Iheanachor at slot 43 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick75
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, A.J. Haulcy adds a safety and leaves quarterback, edge rusher and other spots untouched.
Pick87
Rnd3
Chase Bisontis
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 23: Chase Bisontis for less than the market said. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick90
Rnd3
Malik Muhammad
A reach on Malik Muhammad in the 90th pick; the board had better options right there. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick94
Rnd3
Chandler Rivers
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Chandler Rivers while clear needs at quarterback, edge rusher and other spots sat open.
Pick130
Rnd4
CJ Daniels
CJ Daniels at the 130th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick151
Rnd5
Beau Stephens
By-the-book stuff, Beau Stephens at No. 151 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick227
Rnd7
Isaiah Jatta
A reach for Isaiah Jatta in pick No. 227; a little patience would have been rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick238
Rnd7
Daevin Hobbs
Daevin Hobbs at Round 7, Pick 22 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
