FutureD-
The Texans got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D+. There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Texans started one anyway for Julius Welschof, 103 picks ahead of schedule. A D+ that will need time and luck to look better.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through offensive lineman.
However the rest shakes out, Franklin at that price is a win they earned. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and offensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Cooper DeJean
In the 23rd overall pick they get an island corner, outstanding value to boot.
Pick24
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In the 24th pick they get a premier pass rusher, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick41
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat at Round 2, Pick 9 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick57
Rnd2
Troy Franklin
Somehow Troy Franklin was still sitting there in slot 57, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick59
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper in pick 59 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick85
Rnd3
Trey Benson
Trey Benson slipping to No. 85 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick87
Rnd3
Marist Liufau
By-the-book stuff, Marist Liufau at No. 87 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick124
Rnd4
Jaheim Bell
A reach for Jaheim Bell in slot 124; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick128
Rnd4
Malik Mustapha
They paid up for Malik Mustapha at the Round 4 slot when waiting would have done the job. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick161
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey in the 161st overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick236
Rnd7
Julius Welschof
They reached a country mile for Julius Welschof at Round 7, Pick 16, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick245
Rnd7
Tanner McLachlan
A big swing on Tanner McLachlan at pick No. 245, well ahead of any board in the building. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
