Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureD-
The Texans won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B.

The trade table was a mismatch, and the Texans were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.

McCaffrey falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Reaching for McLachlan left real value on the table behind him.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Cooper DeJean
In pick No. 23 they get a lockdown presence outside, outstanding value to boot.
Pick24 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
In the 24th overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick25 Rnd1 Jared Verse
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick59 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper in pick 59 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick85 Rnd3 Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley in slot 85 lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick87 Rnd3 Marist Liufau
Marist Liufau at Round 3, Pick 24 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick124 Rnd4 Jaheim Bell
Jaheim Bell in the 124th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick128 Rnd4 Malik Mustapha
They paid a round early for Malik Mustapha in No. 128, more than the board wanted. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick161 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
They will replay Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 161 for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick236 Rnd7 Blake Watson
They read the board right and Blake Watson was the payoff at No. 236. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick245 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tanner McLachlan in Round 7, Pick 25, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
