Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureD-
The Texans fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B.

The trade table was a mismatch, and the Texans were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.

Getting McCaffrey where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Reaching for Taylor III left real value on the table behind him.

The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
In the 23rd overall pick they get a premier pass rusher, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick24 Rnd1 Jared Verse
In pick 24 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick27 Rnd1 Kool-Aid McKinstry
Value with a capital V on Kool-Aid McKinstry in the Round 1 slot, a genuine coup. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick59 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
By-the-book stuff, Edgerrin Cooper at Round 2, Pick 27 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick85 Rnd3 Leonard Taylor III
A big swing on Leonard Taylor III at pick No. 85, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick87 Rnd3 Roman Wilson
They did well to land Roman Wilson in slot 87, just ahead of his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick123 Rnd4 Dominick Puni
They will replay Dominick Puni at No. 123 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick127 Rnd4 Malik Mustapha
They paid a round early for Malik Mustapha in the 127th pick, more than the board wanted. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick164 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Luke McCaffrey in slot 164, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick239 Rnd7 Blake Watson
A quiet steal in pick No. 239: Blake Watson for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick248 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
Tanner McLachlan at pick 248 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
