Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesC FutureB+
Good, not great, for the Texans: B-.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Texans did exactly that with Blake Miller in the 38th overall pick. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.

Caldwell at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with running back chief among the fixes.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Emmanuel Pregnon
In the 28th pick they get a building block for the line, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Blake Miller
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Blake Miller. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick69 Rnd3 Max Klare
Value with a capital V on Max Klare in the Round 3 slot, a genuine coup. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick106 Rnd4 Emmett Johnson
Emmett Johnson at slot 106 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick128 Rnd4 Chris McClellan
Chris McClellan at No. 128 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick165 Rnd5 Jalen Farmer
Jalen Farmer at pick 165 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick243 Rnd7 Robert Henry Jr.
A tidy little value on Robert Henry Jr. in the 243rd overall pick, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick244 Rnd7 Jeff Caldwell
Jeff Caldwell at the Round 7 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
