Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureD-
Larceny in pick 86 lands the Texans a B, Franklin and all.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Texans watched Troy Franklin slide 56 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.

Every board in the league had Hopper lower, and that gap is the story. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.

Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers. Running back is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Laiatu Latu
In the 23rd pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick24 Rnd1 JC Latham
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a blindside protector, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Pick25 Rnd1 Byron Murphy II
In the Round 1 slot they get a run-stuffing presence up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick59 Rnd2 Quinyon Mitchell
Quinyon Mitchell in slot 59 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick86 Rnd3 Troy Franklin
Steal is underselling it; Troy Franklin at the 86th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick87 Rnd3 Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at pick No. 87 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick122 Rnd4 Isaac Guerendo
Value with a capital V on Isaac Guerendo in No. 122, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick125 Rnd4 Sione Vaki
They talked themselves into Sione Vaki at pick 125, and the board did not agree. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick126 Rnd4 Ty'Ron Hopper
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ty'Ron Hopper this early at No. 126. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick224 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
Tanner McLachlan at pick 224 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick238 Rnd7 Tyler Owens
The board had Tyler Owens higher than pick No. 238, and the safety fell to them anyway. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick247 Rnd7 Sam Hartman
Sam Hartman at the 247th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
