Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
C+
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesC-
FutureB-
Flashes of a plan, unevenly run, for the Steelers: C+. Of all the ways to open, the Steelers chose the head-scratcher, spending pick 124 on Matt Goncalves with quarterback and running back still wide open. A mixed bag that lands at C+.
They will need Nourzad to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Goncalves falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
JC Latham
In pick No. 20 they get an anchor for the offensive line. More want than need.
Pick74
Rnd3
Devontez Walker
Devontez Walker in the 74th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick79
Rnd3
Renardo Green
No drama and no debate, Renardo Green went about where he belonged in No. 79. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick84
Rnd3
Brandon Dorlus
Nothing to complain about; Brandon Dorlus went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick98
Rnd3
Mekhi Wingo
A conviction pick on Mekhi Wingo at the Round 3 slot that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick124
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and running back to take Matt Goncalves, an offensive lineman that was not the priority.
Pick143
Rnd5
Hunter Nourzad
Hunter Nourzad at pick No. 143 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick172
Rnd5
Kamal Hadden
Good price on Kamal Hadden in Round 5, Pick 36, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
Pick197
Rnd6
M.J. Devonshire
A tidy little value on M.J. Devonshire in pick 197, a step better than break-even. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick211
Rnd6
Erick All
Erick All is a better player than Round 6, Pick 36 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick215
Rnd6
Nathaniel Watson
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Nathaniel Watson. A need, and now a little less of one.
