Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
D-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Steelers to a D-. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Steelers reached some 45 spots for Bryce Foster, and value like that does not grow back. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Getting Stukes where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Jordyn Tyson
In the 21st overall pick they get a difference-maker at receiver. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
Caleb Tiernan
A wild overpay on Caleb Tiernan in No. 39, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick53
Rnd2
A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy in slot 53 lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick85
Rnd3
Domonique Orange
The board had Domonique Orange higher than Round 3, Pick 21, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick91
Rnd3
Carson Beck
They reached a country mile for Carson Beck at pick 91, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick99
Rnd3
Treydan Stukes
Treydan Stukes at the 99th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick121
Rnd4
Kaytron Allen
They talked themselves into Kaytron Allen at the Round 4 slot, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick135
Rnd4
Joe Royer
Fair-plus on Joe Royer, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick146
Rnd5
Harold Perkins Jr.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Harold Perkins Jr. in slot 146. The roster fit checks out.
Pick161
Rnd5
Jaeden Roberts
Jaeden Roberts slid further than he should have, and Round 5, Pick 21 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick175
Rnd5
Zxavian Harris
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Zxavian Harris in No. 175, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick206
Rnd6
Josh Cameron
Josh Cameron is a better player than pick No. 206 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
Pick208
Rnd6
Taylen Green
They read the board right and Taylen Green was the payoff at pick 208. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick216
Rnd6
Bryce Foster
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Bryce Foster well ahead of where he belonged. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick224
Rnd7
Jeremiah Wright
Jeremiah Wright in the 224th pick is fair value, right on his grade. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick226
Rnd7
Eric McAlister
Steal is underselling it; Eric McAlister at slot 226 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick230
Rnd7
Brandon Cleveland
No drama and no debate, Brandon Cleveland went about where he belonged in Round 7, Pick 14. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick237
Rnd7
Jack Kelly
Jack Kelly at pick No. 237 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick248
Rnd7
Fa'alili Fa'amoe
Fa'alili Fa'amoe at pick 248 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
