Powerful DRAFTING FOR THETexans

FutureD-
Larceny in the 58th pick lands the Texans a D-, McKinstry and all. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Texans did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. The McKinstry pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher and quarterback.
The McKinstry value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Byron Murphy II
In pick 23 they get an anchor for the defensive front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick24
Rnd1
Quinyon Mitchell
In the 24th overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner. Need was not the driver here.
Pick41
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
They will replay Brian Thomas Jr. at slot 41 for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick58
Rnd2
Kool-Aid McKinstry
A curious use of No. 58. Edge rusher and quarterback needed the pick; a cornerback in Kool-Aid McKinstry did not.
Pick59
Rnd2
Payton Wilson
A quiet steal in Round 2, Pick 27: Payton Wilson for less than the market said. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick86
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
A want over a need in pick No. 86: Mike Sainristil adds a cornerback while edge rusher and quarterback keeps waiting.
Pick87
Rnd3
Patrick Paul
Circle this one: Patrick Paul at the Round 3 slot is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
Pick124
Rnd4
Leonard Taylor III
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Leonard Taylor III in slot 124, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick128
Rnd4
Isaac Guerendo
Nice patience on Isaac Guerendo, who had no business lasting to pick 128. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick236
Rnd7
Tip Reiman
Value with a capital V on Tip Reiman in No. 236, a genuine coup. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick245
Rnd7
Edefuan Ulofoshio
No edge and no loss on Edefuan Ulofoshio in the 245th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick250
Rnd7
Brevyn Spann-Ford
A tidy bit of business in Round 7, Pick 30, where Brevyn Spann-Ford graded well above the range. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
