FutureC
The Panthers fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B. The war room fell hard for Brady Cook, and it showed at the Round 7 slot: 39 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver.
They banked enough surplus on Caldwell to cover a lot of smaller sins. Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Will Johnson
Nothing to complain about; Will Johnson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick57
Rnd2
Kyle Kennard
Kyle Kennard in pick 57 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick110
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore in the 110th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
Pick113
Rnd4
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo is a better player than No. 113 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick141
Rnd5
Cobee Bryant
Cobee Bryant at slot 141 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick147
Rnd5
Jamaree Caldwell
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 147, where Jamaree Caldwell graded well above the range. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick164
Rnd5
Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick229
Rnd7
Brady Cook
Brady Cook at No. 229 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
