Yves DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Patriots. The Patriots torched the value chart for Jacob Rodriguez, taking him 40 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. Getting Slaughter where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Spending an early pick on linebacker with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the Round 1 slot they get a downhill thumper at linebacker at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
Pick62
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
They will replay Jake Slaughter at pick 62 for years; that is how good the value is. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick94
Rnd3
Charles Jagusah
Charles Jagusah at Round 3, Pick 30 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick124
Rnd4
Jacob Rodriguez
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 124 on Jacob Rodriguez with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Pick130
Rnd4
Max Iheanachor
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Max Iheanachor well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick170
Rnd5
Duce Robinson
A straight-up fair deal on Duce Robinson at slot 170, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick192
Rnd6
Lee Hunter
Lee Hunter at pick No. 192 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick199
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
A big swing on Trey Zuhn III at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. It fills a real need, too.
Pick207
Rnd6
Isaiah Nwokobia
They paid sticker price for Isaiah Nwokobia in slot 207, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick210
Rnd6
Jaren Kanak
A conviction pick on Jaren Kanak at No. 210 that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick245
Rnd7
J. Michael Sturdivant
They reached into another round for J. Michael Sturdivant, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
