Draft Grade — Lions
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesC FutureA+
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Lions: B.

Every other box got a look, but safety did not. The Lions will head to camp with the same hole they walked in with.

That Chappell pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Every board in the league had Zinter lower, and that gap is the story. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.

Pick Analysis
Pick84 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
A reach on Zak Zinter in pick No. 84; the board had better options right there. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick87 Rnd3 Caelen Carson
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Caelen Carson in the Round 3 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick91 Rnd3 Christian Haynes
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Christian Haynes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick123 Rnd4 J. Michael Sturdivant
No edge and no loss on J. Michael Sturdivant in slot 123; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick127 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
No drama and no debate, Cedric Gray went about where he belonged in pick 127. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick205 Rnd6 Ricky Pearsall
A reasonable price with a little left over, Ricky Pearsall in Round 6, Pick 30. It fills a real need, too.
Pick208 Rnd6 Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson in the 208th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick211 Rnd6 Duce Chestnut
Good price on Duce Chestnut in No. 211, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick248 Rnd7 Tyreek Chappell
Tyreek Chappell slid further than he should have, and the 248th pick is lovely value for the cornerback. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
