Draft Grade — Lions

More right than wrong for the Lions, and a B- to prove it.

The Lions bet big and early on Jelani Thurman, 77 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa
In the 25th pick they get a green-dot type in the middle at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick57 Rnd2 Ashton Hampton
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ashton Hampton. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick89 Rnd3 Kade Pieper
Circle this one: Kade Pieper at Round 3, Pick 25 is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick127 Rnd4 Kingston Lopa
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Kingston Lopa at No. 127 is the proof. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick162 Rnd5 Hollywood Smothers
A real head-scratcher, Hollywood Smothers in pick No. 162 is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick205 Rnd6 Jordan Faison
Jordan Faison at the Round 6 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick216 Rnd6 Tavion Gadson
They reached a country mile for Tavion Gadson at pick 216, and the board is aghast. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick246 Rnd7 Avery Johnson
No drama and no debate, Avery Johnson went about where he belonged in the 246th pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick254 Rnd7 Jelani Thurman
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jelani Thurman this early at Round 7, Pick 33. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
