Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the Steelers for Knight Jr.: B.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Steelers were there to profit. Demetrius Knight Jr., the No. 61 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 123rd overall pick.

Every board in the league had Mays lower, and that gap is the story. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Adding Cooper Kupp by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.

The offense got the lion's share of the attention.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Emeka Egbuka
No drama and no debate, Emeka Egbuka went about where he belonged in pick 23. It fills a real need, too.
Pick52 Rnd2 Benjamin Morrison
A tidy bit of business in the 52nd overall pick, where Benjamin Morrison graded well above the range. The roster fit checks out.
Pick63 Rnd2 Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins in No. 63 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick86 Rnd3 Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton in the 86th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick100 Rnd3 Ajani Cornelius
A reach on Ajani Cornelius in pick No. 100; the board had better options right there. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick123 Rnd4 Demetrius Knight Jr.
A linebacker of that caliber at slot 123 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick161 Rnd5 Kevin Winston Jr.
Somehow Kevin Winston Jr. was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 24, and they pounced on premier safety value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick223 Rnd7 Xzavier Henderson
Xzavier Henderson at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick229 Rnd7 Luke Lachey
You do not let a tight end like Luke Lachey reach pick No. 229 and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick245 Rnd7 Cooper Mays
They left a pile of value on the table to take Cooper Mays this early at slot 245. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
