The steal of the weekend belongs to the Cowboys and Sampson: D.

Nobody had Emery Jones Jr. this high, and it is not close. The Cowboys reached 77 spots to get him at No. 106. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.

Sampson at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.

It is not that Powell-Ryland is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
