FutureB-
Larceny in No. 217 lands the Patriots a B+, Marks and all. The real work happened on the phones. The Patriots fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.
They banked enough surplus on Marks to cover a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The Christian Darrisaw deal gives the class an established piece to lean on. Reaching for Burke left real value on the table behind him.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In the 24th overall pick they get an anchor for the defensive front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker in slot 38 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick69
Rnd3
Quinshon Judkins
Quinshon Judkins at pick 69 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick77
Rnd3
Jalen Royals
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jalen Royals in Round 3, Pick 13. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick97
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
A straight-up fair deal on Jared Wilson at pick No. 97, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
Pick106
Rnd4
Denzel Burke
They paid a round early for Denzel Burke in the 106th pick, more than the board wanted. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick144
Rnd5
Hollin Pierce
Hollin Pierce in the Round 5 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick217
Rnd7
Woody Marks
Woody Marks at the 217th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick220
Rnd7
Desmond Watson
Desmond Watson at pick No. 220 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick238
Rnd7
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
Jamon Dumas-Johnson in Round 7, Pick 22 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
