Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall

FutureB
The 49ers robbed the room for Starks. Final grade: C-. When a board-topper like Malaki Starks slides to pick No. 62, you do not overthink it, and the 49ers did not. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C- in the wash.
Every board in the league had Bryant lower, and that gap is the story. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Mykel Williams
In the 20th overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Tyleik Williams
Tyleik Williams at pick No. 43 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick50
Rnd2
Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins at the 50th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick55
Rnd2
Marcus Mbow
A reasonable price with a little left over, Marcus Mbow in No. 55. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick56
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker in slot 56 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick58
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
Nice patience on Kaleb Johnson, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick62
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks at pick 62 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick75
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
Value with a capital V on Donovan Jackson in Round 3, Pick 11, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick86
Rnd3
Zy Alexander
They paid up for Zy Alexander at Round 3, Pick 22 when waiting would have done the job. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick100
Rnd3
Devin Neal
Devin Neal in No. 100 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick113
Rnd4
Pat Bryant
A wild overpay on Pat Bryant in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick138
Rnd4
Seth McLaughlin
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Seth McLaughlin well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick147
Rnd5
Logan Brown
No edge and no loss on Logan Brown in pick No. 147; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick160
Rnd5
Jah Joyner
They paid sticker price for Jah Joyner in the 160th pick, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick191
Rnd6
Kyle Williams
They barely believed it either: Kyle Williams still on the board at slot 191. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick227
Rnd7
Caleb Ransaw
You do not let a safety like Caleb Ransaw reach pick 227 and blink. They did not. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick249
Rnd7
CJ Dippre
Fair-plus on CJ Dippre, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick252
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan in Round 7, Pick 36 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
