Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureA+
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Bears a B+. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Bears reached some 23 spots for Drake Nugent, and value like that does not grow back. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
The Guyton pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. Spending an early pick on safety with running back and cornerback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
They took Rome Odunze at par in the Round 1 slot, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick15
Rnd1
Jer'Zhan Newton
Jer'Zhan Newton at pick 15 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick26
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In the 26th pick they get a problem off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick36
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
A straight-up fair deal on J.J. McCarthy at slot 36, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick46
Rnd2
Calen Bullock
Calen Bullock in pick No. 46 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick66
Rnd3
Tyler Guyton
A quiet steal in the 66th overall pick: Tyler Guyton for less than the market said. It fills a real need, too.
Pick75
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
A real head-scratcher, Zak Zinter in the 75th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick110
Rnd4
Drake Nugent
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Drake Nugent well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick117
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tommy Eichenberg at pick 117. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick127
Rnd4
James Williams
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, James Williams adds a safety and leaves running back and cornerback untouched.
Pick146
Rnd5
Ben Sinnott
They paid a round early for Ben Sinnott in pick No. 146, more than the board wanted. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick186
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Gabe Hall. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick232
Rnd7
Isaiah Williams
Isaiah Williams slid further than he should have, and No. 232 is lovely value for the wide receiver. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick235
Rnd7
Erick All
Erick All at slot 235 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
