Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall B+
ValueB NeedB TradesA FutureB+
More right than wrong for the Commanders, and a B+ to prove it.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Jaren Kanak at slot 188 is 30 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. The bottom line is a respectable B+.

That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Downs at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.

The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Caleb Downs
Value with a capital V on Caleb Downs in the 12th pick, a genuine coup. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick61 Rnd2 Nyck Harbor
Good price on Nyck Harbor in pick No. 61, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick72 Rnd3 Colton Hood
Fair-plus on Colton Hood, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick76 Rnd3 A.J. Harris
A.J. Harris at No. 76 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick129 Rnd4 Jaishawn Barham
Jaishawn Barham in Round 4, Pick 29 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick146 Rnd5 Logan Jones
A straight-up fair deal on Logan Jones at pick 146, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick169 Rnd5 Darius Taylor
No drama and no debate, Darius Taylor went about where he belonged in pick No. 169. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick184 Rnd6 Taylen Green
They took Taylen Green at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick188 Rnd6 Jaren Kanak
A wild overpay on Jaren Kanak in slot 188, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick223 Rnd7 Barion Brown
Barion Brown at Round 7, Pick 8 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
