The board owed the Bengals one, and it paid up: Cam Skattebo, the No. 99 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 5 slot like a gift left on the doorstep. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

They will need Gillotte to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The Quenton Nelson pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.

Hit on Walter Nolen and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
